The opening reception on the 27th for the art show at the Main Library featuring Tyler, Matt N, Katie F, and Nic C's artwork has been postponed! There was a massive sewage/plumbing issue at the library that they are still working to fix, and the library will be closed until next week. We are working to reschedule the reception, and I will post on here once we have a firm date and time.

Hey all! Time got away from me (as usual), and I didn't realize how long it had been since our last post! So, here's the run down of the past month or so, and highlights of some fun stuff we've done. First off, we are very sorry to say goodbye to our staff members Jake and David. The both moved on to other opportunities, and we wish them the best in their new endeavors and thank them for all they brought to our program- we'll miss you guys! On a positive note, we already have a new staff to take Jake's position, Cappel, and so far we are loving having her! Last month, we went out to the UMOCA gallery by Temple Square, and as always, they had some really cool exhibits. But, as a part of this exhibit, they had an area for people to write down or draw their identity, so we took part! A few of us just wrote our names, but Darin drew some fish as well, because he loves fish so much, he feels they are a part of his identity. Earlier this month we finally made it out to the Gilgal Sculpture Garden because Tyler had mentioned that he'd like to go there. I know I had never been before, and it was new to most of the people in our group, too. We had heard it was a little strange, but good thing that we're pretty strange too, and we felt right at home! Now, photo dump! Last, but certainly not least, we have an exciting art show coming up! Tyler, Katie F, Matt N, and Nic C all submitted some artwork for consideration to the City Library at the beginning of the year. The library had contacted us to see if our artists would be willing to do a group art show, to which we gladly said yes! So, the past few months, these four artists have been working hard creating enough pieces to display in the show. And boy do we have enough- I believe the final tally was 53 pieces! I took the pieces over there a little over a week ago, and they are now currently on display in the Lower Urban Gallery at the Main City Library. The opening reception for the show is this Saturday the 27th, from 4-5:30, and we'd love to see some friendly faces, so if you're interested, please swing on by! If you haven't been to the Lower Urban Gallery before, the way to get there is either using the elevator right inside the back door to the library, or use the stairs in the lobby area before going into the library itself. There is also a sign by those stairs pointing you in the right direction. Here's the link for the event for more info: https://events.slcpl.org/event/6989873 A few of us had a chance to swing by there last week, and it all looks great! If you can't make it to the reception, try to swing by before the show ends on September 24th- you won't want to miss this one!
We're pretty good at finding the free art around us, and although we've seen several community murals near us (at the Gateway, by the Salt Palace, just down the street from us), there's somewhat of a walking tour of murals around Main Street in downtown Salt Lake that we hadn't done yet. Yesterday, we wrote down where all of them were, got on trax, and went to search for them! It was really fun seeing all the urban art our city has to offer, and we got some great pics in the process! The mural we started with, because we wanted to make sure we saw that one even if we ran out of time for some of the others, is the Book Mural at 222 S Main Street. When looking up where each of these murals was, I read some background info about this mural- apparently it was commissioned by Sam Weller's Book Store back when they were located on Main Street. If you guys go check it out yourselves, you have to go down a little alley, which ends in in a small courtyard where the mural is. Next, we walked a half block or so to look for a mural called "Nature of Wisdom" that is located on the corner of 200 S and State Street. We didn't walk all the way over to it, because as soon as we saw it, we realized it was better seen from across the street- it was painted at the top of a building, and there was a lot of construction right next door to it, so we just took pictures from across the street. After that one, we went to the corner of 100 S and Main Street, where there were 2 murals on the sides of buildings bordering the same parking lot. The first one was a Jazz mural. I read up on it, and the artist for this one painted all of the outlines on the wall and picked the colors, and invited the community to come and fill it all in with the colors they had there, which we thought was a pretty cool collaborative idea for a community mural. The last mural we looked at was a mural about Utah's women, and celebrates the impact of Utah's women, both past and present. We didn't have time to really look closely at all the women that are on the mural, but if you want to check out who is featured on it, you can go to this link to see: https://womensmural.com/ We hope you guys are finding lots of fun things to do this summer too!
How is everyone doing this fine summer! Although it's been a little hot for my liking outside lately, we've been going lots of fun places. We've been making sure that we always bring water, fans, and sunscreen, because, again- it's hot! Last week, we went to the International Peace Gardens for the first time this season, and it was so lovely! We always love checking out all the gardens there, seeing the pretty flowers, sculptures, and animals (we really enjoyed watching the squirrels this time). A lot of the gardens that people wanted their pictures taken in were Asian countries' gardens, so here's some pictures from our tour through Asia! We also went to the Utah Arts Festival last week, and it was tons of fun! We were sadly too busy enjoying the festival to take any pictures of us festival-ing, but trust us- fun was had! And several of our individuals managed to get their hands on some free merch, so everyone was excited about that- free stuff! Today I actually had some free time to wander around taking some pictures during classes to give you all a glimpse into a typical Monday at TURN :) In Cesar's drawing class today, they were doing an interesting project where they drew out some backgrounds, then had cutout images of various subjects and placed them onto the background drawings to come up with some crazy/fun scenarios. In our percussion class each week, most people use it as an opportunity to be loud! Everyone usually starts out with their favorite percussive instrument, but then there are a few opportunities throughout the class to switch it up and grab a different instrument. Mandalas are pretty popular with some of our folks, and this is a class option that we have a few times a week. Jessica is definitely one of our regulars in mandalas, and she makes such beautiful designs, doesn't she? We go various places after lunch each day, and today we went to the Day-Riverside Library Branch. They have a summer reading challenge going on called "Oceans of Possibilities," so they had some pretty cool oceanic-themed displays. Jonathan and Darin just had to get their picture taken in front of one of the displays! A lot of our time at the library was spent in the graphic novel section. Jonathan found the Star Wars section, and Jessica found a cute graphic novel that was illustrated all in pinks, blacks, and whites. Now we're having fun doing some karaoke, and working on various art projects in the art room! It's been a good Monday! I hope you all are having a lovely Monday too!
Hey all! So first of all, I want to give you guys a quick announcement about something exciting that's coming up. Katie F, Tyler, Matt N, and Nic C submitted some artwork awhile back to be shown at one of the Salt Lake City Library branches. We found out that although none of them were selected for solo shows at any of the libraries, they are all going to show their artwork in a group show at the Main City Library, in the Lower Urban Gallery! There is quite a bit of space down there, so they will all get to show quite a bit of artwork! The show is scheduled for August 15-September 24th, 2022, and right now the opening reception is set for August 20th from 4-5:30, but there's a possibility that may change, so stay tuned! Well I don't know if you guys have noticed, but it is warm out there! With the warm weather, we have some opportunities for activities that we don't have the rest of the year. For one, we've been doing more sit and sketch activities, where we go somewhere outdoors, bring drawing supplies with us, and draw our surroundings. It's been really nice to be able to do art while also enjoying the nice weather- one of our favorite spots to do this has been Temple Square, because they have so many beautiful flower there! Today, we went to one of the Lunch Bunch Concerts at the Gallivan Plaza. We've loved going to these concerts in the past, and today was just as fun as ever. The band today was Cam Gallagher and the Tasty Soul, and they were groovin! The weather might have been hot, but the awesome music made it well worth it :) If you get a chance, you should look up this band, because they were great! Gotta love a band with a horn section! Look how beautifully these tulips turned out!
I'm sure as the summer goes on we'll have lots more awesome things to show you all. Stay safe, stay healthy, and try not to get too much sun! Happy Star Wars Day! It has been far too long since I did a blog post- many apologies about that! Things were extra crazy and busy, but we're finding our bearings again. That's not to say that we didn't have fun while we were busy, though! We'll start with today and move backwards :) We did some fun Star Wars themed activities this morning, like paint while listening to Star Wars soundtracks and notating Luke's theme on a musical staff in our music theory class, but the highlight of our Star Wars activities was definitely the Urban Arts Gallery. The Urban Arts Gallery is just over at the Gateway, and being so close, we tend to go there a lot. Well, they just put up their Star Wars show, so we had to go over today to Star Wars it up! We can't always take pictures with the artwork at galleries, so it was nice that they had this photo op area for people. In addition to all the Star Wars art, they also had some other cool fan art, like Lord of the Rings and Marvel. Speaking of Urban Arts Gallery, we had some artists who were able to display artwork at the Urban Arts Gallery over the last few months. In March, we had 10 artists that had artwork on display in their Blooming Euphoria show, which was an abstract exhibit. That's right, 10 artists! So, a big shout out to Chris, Cyd, Darin, Jonathan E, Katie F, Kelly, Linda, Ryan, Matt N, and Tim. And, to make things even more exciting, Jonathan sold one of his pieces! Congratulations everyone! In April they had their Apricity show, which focused on landscapes and spring themes, and only 3 of our artists were chosen to participate in that one: Katie F, Matt N, and Tim. Here are pictures of some of the pieces they exhibited last month: Now that the weather has been getting better, we've been having lots of fun just hanging out outside, usually at the Gateway- it's just so close to us! We've also been going to organ recitals at the Tabernacle at Temple Square each week. They do these free concerts every day at noon, but we only go once a week. It's really cool getting to hear music on such a big, grand organ- you should check it out sometime if you've never been! Let's all cross our fingers that I become better at posting regularly, and you all have a lovely Star Wars Day!!!
You guys are never going to believe this, but today is the 10th anniversary of our program! On February 8, 2012, TURN City Center for the Arts opened, and on that day, it was only Nina and our two coordinators at the time, Ali and Allison. We have grown so much since then, and accomplished so many things in the 10 years since, that we never could have foreseen. We've participated in several art shows and juried competitions in the community, shown our short films in film festivals and special exhibitions, had our own booth at the Urban Arts Festival multiple years, performed at the Davis County Fair, and that's not even mentioning all the fun stuff we do here daily! Our client base, class schedule, physical program, and skills have all grown over these 10 years, and we've been blessed to work with some truly wonderful clients, staff, and volunteers. A big part of what our program has become is due to Allison and Ali's vision that they had for our little art center. They got us up and running, and I just simply kept it going following that same vision :) Thank you Ali and Allison! Things are still a little weird as we continue to weather this pandemic, but I wanted to give you guys a glimpse into our typical day at the art center. For our acrylic painting class this morning, we were trying something out in an effort to take ourselves out of the equation when creating, and did some blindfold painting! It took a little getting used to, and most of the artists were a little hesitant at first, but once they got in the swing of it, created paintings that were not only very interesting, but quite different from their usual styles. I wasn't able to be in the other two classes that happened at the same time to get pictures, but we also had a mythology class where we are reading and discussing Russian fairy tales, and music history where the class was learning about Frank Sinatra. During our second class, we had an art history class where Jake was teaching them about Augusta Savage and her sculptures. It was great to learn about all the work she did, as well as the struggles she endured as a female artist of color in the early 20th century. The class looked at and discussed/analyzed a sculpture of hers entitled "Portrait Head of John Henry" During the art history class, we also had a documentaries class where they were watching a film about dinosaurs in Alaska, and a karaoke class. Open studio is always a hotbed of fun, and today we had people, drawing, painting, singing karaoke, and writing. We're still creating, having fun, and making connections with each other and the community! Here's to 10 more years (and more)!
We had a pretty exciting event for one of our artists this past weekend. Tyler had been working with an artist mentor through Art Access' Partners program for the last few years. Usually it's just a year long collaboration, but because of the pandemic, things were a little different for this round of artists. Tyler's mentor, Namon, is a talented artist who works with some collage techniques, and does a lot of mixed media work, which fits very well with Tyler's artistic style. The opening reception for the Partners show was this last Friday at the Bountiful Davis Art Center, and it was such a cool event! Tyler and Namon made several collaborative pieces for the exhibit, and also each are displaying some of their solo work in the show. Here is the info for the exhibit if any of you want to check it out!
Bountiful Davis Art Center 90 N Main Street Bountiful, UT 84010 Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm The show will be on display through February 26th. Congratulations on your show, Tyler! Happy new year everyone! We've been settling into 2022, and are looking forward to a good year! We did a New Year's thing last year that was fun enough that we did it again, and decided to make it a tradition! We had all who wanted to, fill out what their new year's resolutions are on a card that we then sealed, put their name on the outside, and put on our Christmas tree. We'll pack the resolutions away next week when we put the tree away, and next year when we get the tree out, we'll pass them out to everyone so we can check up on how we've done with them! Although it's been difficult to get around in the snow the few big storms we've had this winter, man is snow pretty to watch (when you're able to just stay inside and watch it). We discovered that Matt J really likes making paper snowflakes once the snow hits, so he and I (Katie) have been making plenty of them, and decided to designate one of the walls in the art room as the "snowflake wall." We've just about filled it up- isn't it great? And in a stroke of brilliance, Matt made some icicles to put at the top of our wall- so creative! Stay warm, stay safe, and Happy New Year!
Are you guys about ready for Christmas? We're just about there, and I wanted to share some of the Holiday stuff we've been doing! First off, we finally got our tree up! We were trying to figure out where the best place would be for it in our new space, and I think we've got it :) Chris and Jonathan were helping us decorate it once we got it put together (with some snazzy paper ornaments that we made last year) Thanks guys! This week we also made some Christmas cards, and can I say- they all turned out great! Everyone used a great balance of drawing, stamps, and collage with decorated paper to great effect, and I'm sure these cards will be greatly appreciated by the recipients :) Lastly, if you've ordered calendars, they are ready! If you got them to give out as Christmas presents, make sure you pick them up this week, and be aware that we will be closed on Friday the 24th. All the information about paying and picking up was emailed to everyone who ordered calendars. If you missed the ordering deadline and want a calendar, I ordered a few extra of each calendar, which are sold on a first come first serve basis.
Well as fun as the holidays are, everything gets pretty busy around them, and we've definitely been feeling that at our program, as I'm sure you guys have in your own lives. Just make sure you take the time to enjoy the moment and enjoy the season! Merry Christmas! |
