Hey all! With Halloween fast approaching, this week we did one of our beloved annual Halloween traditions with our wonderful artist in residence, Kathleen Mason! Years ago, during her first Halloween season with us, Kathy introduced us to shadow dance theater, and it was a huge hit from the get-go. This is something we've done every year since, and all of our folks absolutely love it! We get the lights and sheet set up, and then Kathy teaches us some Halloween poems to act out with our shadows. The picture below is everyone prepping for a round of acting out a poem about a witch's stew! Kathy always brings plenty of costumes and props for us to use, and man, do we have fun with them! After we act out a few of the poems Kathy has brought to teach us, she puts on a lot of Halloween themed music for us to take turns dancing or acting things out to. You would not believe how fun it can be to make your shadow move around! Kathy even brings some transparencies and small props to put onto the overhead projector we use, so that the people being the shadows can react to a branch shadow poking at them, or some giant shadow scissors trying to cut their shadow! We also always include some free dancing time, so everyone who wants to can dance their shadow across the sheet. The great thing about the shadow dance theater, is that people who wouldn't normally get excited about dancing or moving in front of others, love taking a turn and participating. Thank you Kathy!!!
