All orders are due by November 30th! The calendars won't be printed until the first week of December, after all of our orders are in, so you don't need to worry about payment until pick up. Not sure that I'll get to do another post before Thanksgiving, so here's wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at TURN!
Hey all! This week was really fun, and part of what made it so fun, is we went to the Planetarium! We lucked out with our timing, because just as we got there, a huge group of school kids was leaving, so it was pretty empty and low key for most of the time we were there- we had the run of the place! We learned some pretty cool stuff, and some of their exhibits, I'm not gonna lie, we maybe didn't learn a ton- but we had fun playing the games anyway! Now, onto business! If you're on our email list, you should have already gotten an email about this, but we are making calendars again! The calendars are $10 each, and are wall calendars that are 11x17 when open, 8.5x11 when closed. We have some really great artwork in our calendars this year, and you won't want to miss out! If you want one (or a lot), email me with your name, how many, and which one you want. You can also email me any other calendar related questions: [email protected]

Hey all- Happy Halloween! So first up, let me report back on how we did at the Sandy Visual Art Show- we did fantastic! They only awarded 5 ribbons in the disabled category, and 4 of them went to our program! Nicholas P got 1st place, Chris got 2nd place, Tyler got 3rd place, and Jessi got 4th place! In addition to those, all of our other artists received an award of merit. Great job, everyone! Now, on to Halloween! It was a busy, but fun day for all of us here at the art center. We started things off with painting some mini pumpkins, hearing scary stories from around the world, and drawing monsters. We then did some Nightmare Before Christmas karaoke, learned about how to write a scary story, and made some sugar skull art. It was a busy morning! In the afternoon, we took some people over to the main office to do some trick or treating, and others stayed here and did some Halloween coloring sheets while watching some Halloween shows. We had two viewing options- Ghostbusters, and some Twilight Zone episodes for those who wanted something a little spookier. Amidst all the busy fun, we were able to snag a group photo to commemorate all of our clients' awesome costumes today. Back row: Steve as a trucker, Joe as a wolf, Tyler as a scary clown, Jonathan as a Jedi, Katie F as a witch Middle row: Nina as an elephant activist, Linda as Bella Swan, Chris as a pirate, Darin as a Star Wars trooper, Rose as a pumpkin, Nick P as Deadpool Front row: Cyd as Maleficent, Shane as a Star Wars fan, Nikki as Miguel from Cobra Kai, Katie G as Mulan, and Matt J as a hobbit Happy Halloween!!!
I know we've been terrible about posting on here, so let me give you latest update on all of our art goings-on. First off, I am so sorry that I missed posting about the State Fair! We had so many people submit artwork, and have so many ribbons to brag about! Kelly and Ryan got 1st place ribbons, Darin and Katie F got 2nd place ribbons, Katie G and Shane got 3rd place ribbons, Cyd and Matt N got 4th place ribbons, Jessica D and Tyler got 5th place ribbons, Chris and Robin got 6th place ribbons, Linda and Nic C got 7th place ribbons, and Rosealita, Nikki, Jon E, Walter, Jessi, and August all got Honorable Mention ribbons! Such winning artists! Next up, we have another show that several of our artists have submitted artwork to- the Sandy Visual Art Show. The opening reception is this next Monday, and you can go view the artwork any day after that until October 22nd. The show is at the Sandy Senior Center, and their hours are 10am-4pm Monday through Friday, and they are closed Saturdays and Sundays. Masks are required to enter the building. I'll post an update here once I find out what awards (if there are any) our artists won. In past years they've done certificates or ribbons, so we're hopeful :)
And for our last art show excitement, Katie Felgar will have a private show on display at one of the library branches! This is something she applied for a few years ago, and it was set to happen in 2020. But then... 2020 happened. It got rescheduled, but is still happening! The library is not doing any events currently out of an abundance of caution, so there will be no opening reception for the show. However, you can go see her artwork at the Day-Riverside library branch (1575 W 1000 N, SLC) anytime after October 13th during business hours (M-Th 10-9, F-S 10-6). Currently, all of the Salt Lake library branches require masks. It's a beautiful abstract show, and you won't want to miss it! The Urban Arts Gallery puts on a Skate Deck Challenge exhibit each year, where artists from all over submit pieces that are created on or from a skate deck for a skateboard. For a few years, we've had some artists participate in this show, and this year we had more than ever take part! This was mostly thanks to our new staff, Jake. Usually artists would buy their skate deck from the gallery, but by the time we tried to do so, they were all out! In came Jake to the rescue, as he happened to have several used skate decks in his car, and many more at home that he was willing to donate. Thanks, Jake! Today is the first day of the skate deck show, and we went over there this afternoon to get a look at them. Here are some photos of our displaying artists with their work: The staff at the gallery was kind enough to take the boards off of the wall so that our artists could hold them to get their picture taken. You can see all of these boards on display at the Urban Arts Gallery (at the Gateway Mall) until October 3rd.
This month some of our artists have had artwork on display at the Urban Arts Gallery, and this is the last week to see it there! Darin, Kelly, Tim, Tyler, Chris, and Katie F all have artwork as a part of TURN's mini show at the gallery. The main show at Urban Arts this month is ARTifacts of Sound, so there's a bunch of cool music and musician related art that you can check out while you're there! The Gallery is open 12-9, Tuesday-Sunday, the address is 116 South Rio Grande, SLC Utah at the Gateway, and the show runs until August 1st. Check out some of these pictures of our artists with their artwork at the opening reception for the exhibit!
We went to Clark Planetarium recently, and not only was it a great way to get out of the heat, but it was super fun and we learned some cool stuff! It's definitely worth a look if you have the time!
Well, summer is here, and I don't know about you, but we've sure been having fun! We've been able to do more fun things outside since the weather's been nice, although within reason, because the heat lately has been ridiculous! Chris has really enjoyed going to Pioneer Park to shoot some hoops- and ya know what? He's not bad! Darin loves going anywhere, but has also really enjoyed getting to play basketball as well. Did you guys know that Darin used to play basketball with the Special Olympics? We've found a great way to stay cool during this heat wave- water fights! We've only had a few so far this year, but it really helped us not to melt on that record breaking hot day we had last week. You can tell by the pics how epic it was! Something else we did last week was go for an architectural tour of some of the historic buildings downtown. Despite the heat, we all really enjoyed learning about the history of the buildings in the exchange plaza area of downtown Salt Lake. Stay cool out there and have fun, and we'll do the same!
We've been very busy this month, mostly with our move! We have moved! Not too far, though- just across the courtyard, so we are in the same building as before. Our new space is bigger than both of the other spaces we just moved out of, and although we're still settling into the space and figuring out how best to make things work, we're all big fans, and excited to have a new home! For those who need our new address, it is 511 W 200 S suite 100 :) We're hoping this will be our new forever home, and are so grateful for all of the people who helped so much with the move, and getting all the paperwork and red tape sorted out for us to start in the new space as soon as we have. And a huge huge thank you to my staff who spent so much time every afternoon helping me move things, unpack, and organize- thank you everyone!!! Now, let's talk about some of the fun things we've been doing! With the nice weather, we've been getting out more, and I gotta say, I am loving it! I feel so fortunate that we're so close to so many cool locations that we can just walk to. So not only are we getting some great quality time outside, we're also getting a little bit of exercise on the way there! I wanted to take a minute to highlight a cool art class that Ki did recently that was just so creative, and a lot of fun to do! She watered down some acrylic paints and then froze them in an ice tray, then we painted using the ice cube paints. It yielded some really cool pieces, because as it turns out, ice paints are really good for blending colors, and transfer to the paper almost like oil pastels do. It was such a fun project! Hope you're all doing well as this pandemic winds down, and that you're finding ways to do things that bring you joy!
We've been having fun walking everywhere lately now that the weather has been nice (well, last week anyway), and there were some pretty cool things going on over at the Gateway last week! The Gateway always has cool seasonal decorations, and they just recently put up some new stuff in the sitting area over there. They hung a bunch of hexagonal pieces of plexiglass overhead, and when the sun shines on them, they cast colorful hexagons on the ground. We all had fun stepping under the different colors to see the colors on ourselves! One of the other days when we walked over to the Gateway last week, they had some special event going on at the Olympic Plaza. It was related to Lego, but we're still not sure what it actually was for... but we still had fun, anyway! They had a screen set up, and each person took turns dancing in front of the screen as it created a video of them dancing with some whimsical looking llamas. Now... photo dump! Everyone had a blast dancing and loved seeing themselves on the screen! We definitely lucked out, because every time we've been back to the Gateway since, it hasn't been there- it must have been a flash promotion for just one day. We hope you're all doing well and having fun, even with this gloomy spring weather. Happy weekend!
Well, between the nicer weather and more people coming back to the program, things are looking up! We had a jam-packed week full of fun activities, and have a bigger program than we've had in over a year! With the nice weather, we went for so many walks this week, and we were all soaking up the sun as much as we could. On Wednesday, we took an extra long walk over to the Triad Plaza, and then down to the Crane Building. On the way, we stopped to look at some statues at the Vivint Arena of Karl Malone and John Stockton. We noticed that around the statues, they had Karl Malone's footprints, so we all took turns standing on them to see how our feet measured up. Today, we had one of our fullest Hapkido class that we'd had in awhile, and everyone did so well! A lot of our students had a really long break from Hapkido during the pandemic, which left a lot of time to forget things. Now that we're back in the swing of things, it's all started to come back, and today was one of the best classes we've had in awhile! People were remembering their forms, they executed them well, and took correction from their black belt instructors as needed. Great job everyone!
